1/22/2009 New Year Dumplings: The Domes 1/22/2009
Mary-Liz Shaw, originally published in Milwaukee Journal Sentinal, January 22, 2009 If the kids are saying they're bored -- again -- take them to Chinese New Year celebrations at The Domes on Saturday to learn a new culinary skill: the art of making dumplings. Dumplings are an important part of Chinese New Year festivities. Many Chinese families will gather on the eve of the New Year to make dumplings for the festival. The tiny round bundles of wrapped pork or vegetables resemble ancient ingots, which is why they have come to symbolize wealth in the new year. The Domes' celebration runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and includes a dragon parade, calligraphy and alternative healing presentations, a lantern show and a dragon parade. Admission to The Domes is $5.50 general, $4 for kids. |
